The impact of L1 speaking style, task mode, and L2 proficiency on L2 fluency: A within-subject study of monologic and dialogic speech

In this article, we examined how speaking style in one’s first language (L1), task mode (monologue vs. dialogue), and second language (L2) proficiency impact L2 learners’ speech fluency. The findings demonstrated that all three factors played a role in L2 speech fluency, but to a different extent. The findings can inform the development of more efficient fluency teaching practices and increase learners’ awareness of the factors impacting their L2 speech fluency. The study was a part of the FDF2 project (funded by the Research Council of Finland).
